How to spot a real bargain in-store

"Up to 70% off" — you see that phrase everywhere, but it doesn't mean much without context. Here's how to evaluate a deal before pulling out your wallet.

Compare to the real regular price

The only discount that matters is one calculated against the actual regular price of the item elsewhere — not an artificially inflated "suggested" price. For name-brand clothing and shoes, a quick search of the model online is often enough to confirm whether the savings are real.

Check the condition

At a liquidation store, merchandise is generally new or near-new — but it's worth checking the seams, shoe soles, and original packaging when there is one. A great price is still a bad purchase if the item is defective.

Watch out for limited sizes and models

Unlike a regular store, liquidation inventory doesn't automatically restock in the same size or model. If something fits and you like it, it's rarely a good idea to wait and "think about it" — it might be gone next time you're in.

Look past the tag

Some of the best finds don't have a clearly marked "sale" tag — they're simply part of an arrival already priced low. Take the time to dig through the categories you're interested in, like clothing or shoes, rather than relying only on big signs.

The real test

The best question to ask isn't "is this on sale", but "would I buy this item at this price, even without the word discount". If the answer is yes, it's probably a real bargain.
